In Repose

A few days ago, The Lad's School Class was scheduled to attend a Saturday Morning event at a temple near the school...the event related to the first occasion in which Buddha was moved to gather a few people around him and explain some of the foundation aspects of his recently assembled philosophy.

I drove The Lad the 56km to the temple, and had some idle time while I waited for the event to conclude. I took the opportunity to wander about the temple with my smartphone, and captured a few things I found to be of interest. One such thing was this fairly large [say 5 metres long] statue of Buddha in his classic Reclining Pose.

Some folks might prefer the variation, below, resulting from my somewhat heavy-handed twiddling with a smartphone App.

Tomorrow I will show another "find".

think i will go for the strong colours of the top shot, Ray.
Ray: That was my first choice, Ayush, but then I started wondering...
Both images are really lovely - I love the expression on Buddha's face.
Ray: This is a classic Thai Buddha icon, Elizabeth...the artists are trying for "serene" but the expression often seems more like "self satisfied" or "smug" to Westerners.

Très belle statue. J'aime beaucoup son expression.
Ray: C'est une statue très attrayante, Martine, et l'expression est destinée à transmettre la sérénité ... J'aime beaucoup, aussi.

This Buddha has a heavy lidded sensual look about him

I find it sensual, and identify a blend of Masculine and Feminine in the expression.

Both images appeal in different ways. his Buddha seems to be slightly less fat-faced than others that you have shown.
Ray: Yes...quite lean and fit-looking, Alan...perhaps a bit like a TdF competitor in the GC.

Oh, the sleep of the blessed! Oh sorry, I see his eyes open. I prefer the couloured image.
Ray: Reclining...relaxed and serene...but, not asleep, Philine.
Shows what you can do with a phone these days
Ray: In truth, Bill, I am perfectly relaxed about using the phonecam for most things these days...it just comes up short on macro work.
I do prefer the top one with the stronger colours.
Ray: I think there is general agreement on that, Brian.
I prefer the top one here.
Ray: Yes...perhaps I was too crude with the twiddling, Mary.

The reclining Buddha "represents the historical Buddha during his last illness, about to enter the parinirvana. He is lying on the right flank, his head resting on a cushion or relying on his right elbow, supporting his head with his hand."
Ray: Thank you, Philine...that is the context of this popular pose...his expression suggests he is contented.
Both presentations look great!
Ray: You are very kind, Tom.
