Fun with Fone #2

Novice Monks at the temple have collected their food for the mid-day meal, and are off to find a comfortable place to eat it. The monk on the left of the image is Nong Plaeng...Na's nephew...who often stays with us.

Thailand's Buddhist Monks eat twice each day:

First...at about 0400, they are woken, and eat a simple meal of rice porridge, before commencing morning chants followed by alms gathering, and then various tasks of housekeeping.

Second...at about 1130, they consume a substantial meal, which has to be sufficient for the rest of the day and the night.

I see you have taken to painting, Ray! I don't think I could last from 1130 till 0400. How long do the monks sleep at night?
Ray: I would not be unusual to find that monks take an afternoon nap, Lisl..and, its probably lights out by around 2100.

I presume that after noviceship is complete they can eat better.
Ray: This is their routine for as long as they remain monks, Chad.

Nice image but what a life they lead!
Ray: I doubt I would enjoy the life of a monk, Chris...2 scrounged meals per day, no beer, celibate... sad

A very different way of life to us in the Wild West. Not my idea of fun, I have to say.
Ray: The monks don't get to just wander into a Teashop whenever the mood takes them, Alan!

They seem to hungry, rushing off to find a comfortable place to eat their food. If they are content with their life?
Ray: The Novice Monks seem to be well taken care of by the older monks, Philine...I think they are quite relaxed about the routines they follow.
Ray: That way of eating would not, generally, work for me, Mary.

However, there is a current popular view that "fasting" for 16 hours out of every day is good for the body...I am interested to see if the evidence becomes available.

I undertake a complete 3.5 day fast once or twice each year...only sipping a little plain water during that period but eating zero...I have been doing it for 4 years and do feel that it gives some medium term benefits.

I like this App, but have found that many images just don't work well with the filters on offer...this one is good, as is the one I showed yesterday.
I guess if they do the monk thing for a period of time when they are growing up like your son it's not too bad, but one must be devout to do it for life.
Ray: A Monk's life is not for me, Brian.
I don't want to be a monk...I need more than 2 meals a day
Ray: There are a few things about being a monk that would be difficult for me, Bill...beginning with...two scrounged meals per day, no beer, celibacy...
Very nice, Ray!
Ray: Thank you, Elizabeth.
