photoblog image The Wall #5

The Wall #5

Here is another panel depicting traditional Canal [Klong] lifestyle:

* In the foreground, monks in their canoe are collecting alms.

* Behind them, a floating fruit vendor is selling coconuts and bananas.

* Under the bridge, someone is fishing from a boat.

In the Klong areas, just outside Bangkok, these activities are continuing in the 21st century...some have been turned into big tourist attracting Floating Markets but, if you take the time to get away from the tourist areas, you can witness the slow and gentle pace of life just like is illustrated in this panel.

Someone sure was masterful in depicting these scenes, Ray.
Ray: They are well executed, Ginnie, and I like to interpret them..

Those monks seem to do little more than chant and collect dosh. What do they do with it all?
Ray: They eat the food, and spend the cash on private Learjets, Chris.
C'est intéressant de voir ces marchands en bateaux.
Ray: La vie du canal est fascinante, Martine.
Not a bad lifestyle when you see the mess the West is in
Ray: I think the simple, up-country life has much to offer, Bill, but I would like a hybrid.

A helping of rice for the monk. His container seems a lot bigger than the one he is served from. I hope he shares. Oh yes, it is only a mural, so scratch the thought.
Ray: Monks will collect from several merit-makers, Louis, then share their collection with many others.
The beautiful murals and your narrative make me think of two lines from that great song "The Way We Were" which went "Can it be that it was all so simple then
Or has time rewritten every line"
Ray: Thank you for your very eloquent comment, Brian.
These are fascinating images, Ray.
Ray: I thought so too, Tom.
Canals are fascinating. I wish we had more over here...
Ray: It is like a different, alien place, Larry...fascinating!
