Flowering Morning Glory

The garden creeper popularly known as Morning Glory [water convolvulus] grows strongly in our hot humid climate...it loves water, but survives well even in dry soil. We have two varieties growing in our garden.

 

Morning Glory makes a delicious green vegetable...the runners, leaves and even flowers can be eaten raw or stir fried...the stir fried meal [known in Thai as Pak Bung Fie Daeng] is one of my favourite Thai dishes, and I eat it at least a couple of times each week.

Lovely edibles! Is the taste sweet or spicy?
Ray: The natural taste is sweet and delicate, but we dress it up with generous helpings of chili and garlic.

We have two wild "bindweeeds" growing in the garden - I see from wiki that there are between 200-250 different types. I wonder if ours are edible
Ray: It is a good question, Lisl, and I don't know the answer.

I do know that one variety is grown for its edible roots...these are the bright orange "sweet potato" which is not potato at all! We have this one growing also, but Na says the leaves are a bit too strong tasting to eat, so we just eat the roots which are delicious.

c'est une plante pas vraiment aimé par chez nous car très envahissante ..
Je vois que sa cuisine reste un plat très connu par chez toi (très epicé par contre ..piment et ail..)

Ray: Il est très envahissant, Claudine, mais il est très apprécié en Thaïlande en tant que légume délicieux, et il est également très apprécié par les vaches et les buffles.

We have similar convolvulus plants here in the UK but as far as I know nobody eats them..
Ray: Give 'em a try, Chris...I think you will like them. I have an easy and spectacular recipe if you are interested.

a wonderful vegetabe- too beautiful to be eaten- I hope a bee will come to please Morning Glory!
Ray: This food is much loved by Human Beans as well as cows and buffalo, Philine...there is still plenty to brighten the garden, as it is a very strong vegetable.

Now these are very common to those in the UK. We don't have them pretty pure;e/pink bits, though. I've never eaten one as I sure it would end in my death.
Ray: It is somewhat different from fruit cake, Alan, but is quite tasty in its own way and especially with copious condiments of stir-fried garlic and chili.

And there was me think that it was a petunia, I am rubbish at nature stuff Ray.
Ray: The flower does have a slight resemblance to the petunia, Chad...you are not so far off the mark on this occasion.
Ray: We and the cows eat both of these varieties, Mary.

I don't know if all varieties are edible, but think they might be. [Update... I just accessed ths site, which say all are edible, but don't eat the seeds... https://www.poison.org/articles/2007-jun/are-morning-glories-poisonous ]

"Daeng" is the Thai word for "Red"..."Mot" is "Ant"...Mot Daeng is the Ant Red [i.e. Red Ant] that I sometimes feature.
my father planted morning glories and they were always beautiful... did you know that they only open every second day Ray... but since they alternate there are always some on the vines....petersmile
Ray: I did not know this, Peter, and now intend to observe the phenomenon by experiment in the garden.
Here they are just regarded as a weed. Albeit a pretty one
Ray: Certainly they are hardy and grow where they please, Bill. It takes away the angst when you eat them in a delicious stir fry.
