A long lens is desirable when hunting this fast-moving, human-shy, always immaculate species.

my they are both very beautiful Ray... the second one looks like a lady in a formal flowing gown....petersmile
Ray: They are lovely critters, Peter, and catch the eye as they flutter about the garden.
I love the pale yellow, Ray - beautiful shots!
Ray: They brighten the garden, Elizabeth.

Isn't this gorgeous with all those veins showing up like that. Round of applause Maestro!
Ray: I think the prominent struts in the wings indicate quite robust structure, Chris, and it reminds me of the old balsa&paper&dope model planes I used to build.

I almost missed it at first glance; I thought it was a leaf! (I must get out more). The wing "spars" are very prominent.
Ray: Like the structure of wings of early aeroplanes, Alan...I suppose this is where we got our first flying machine ideas from.

She looks newly-emerged, but from what you say she always looks pristine?
Ray: Every one I see looks like this, Lisl...I think they are just well-built!
Lovely pics Ray. I wish we had more butterflies here but numbers have dwindled
Ray: We have many butterflies in the garden at the moment, Bill. We don't use insecticides on the house garden or the rice farm.

MAGNIFIQUE !!!!
Deux très belles photos , merci
Bonne journée
Ray: C'est un très joli papillon, Claudine. Merci pour votre généreux commentaire.
These are really wonderful. I do not own such a lens.
Ray: I really like these simple-patterned butterflies, Mary.

Your longest lens at longest focal length will probably work reasonably well.
We've had virtually nil butterflies in our garden this year otherwise I would have tried out your long lens method for myself.
Ray: Oh Dear! If Maureen's beautiful garden cannot attract butterflies then there must be a problem in England, Brian.

I'll show a butterfly pic from time to time, to make you feel better about this.
Must be hard to spot in the foliage!
Ray: Easy to see when they are flying, Tom, but a challenge when they are on a shrub.
