photoblog image Caught a Grasshopper

Caught a Grasshopper

I startled a green grasshopper, which promptly leaped and landed in the Orb Spider's net.

As quick as a flash, the spider was onto the prey, and wrapped it securely in a web straitjacket...you can clearly see the multiple strands of silk she is pulling from the spinaret orifice on her bottom.

I have seen an Orb Spider capturing a small bird...on a rare occasion when I did not have a camera at hand.

Scenes like this are occurring continually in the ricefield.

What a capture, Ray - I mean yours!
Ray: It was all over in a couple of seconds, Lisl...I was fortunate to have a "primed" camera in my hands when the grasshopper hopped.

Ray: Merci, Claudine.
The wonders of Nature!
Ray: And, ain't Nature wonderful, Ginnie!

The 'Small World' is very fascinating and you got yourself here some great pictures. It is amazing how that works when something is caught up in a web.
Ray: Spiders are extremely successful critters in The World of Small, Astrid...even more so than Ants.

Blimey, Ray, nature in tooth and claw. Spinaret orifice...Weren't they a prog rock band in the 70's ?
Ray: I feel you might be thinking of a 70's motorcycle Club which was named Rat's Rectum, Frank.
