photoblog image The Wedding Collection

The Wedding Collection

An eclectic collection of shoes at the threshold of the house where traditional wedding rituals were being enacted.

In Thailand there is an excellent habit which has everyone remove their shoes at the threshold and pad around inside the house in bare feet. This, of course, is one reason why Thai folks prefer flip-flops to lace-ups.

I find threshold shoe collections fascinating.

[Attention...English Buddies...I have a special series for you, commencing tomorrow!]

there is a similar concept in India, with the added twist that if the entrance is not well seen from the interior of the house, some of them might be pilfered (the embellished one is a high candidate), Ray!
Ray: It has often seemed to me that this presents an excellent opportunity for a footwear upgrade, Ayush.

I assume that Na was wearing the high heels, well ordered?
Ray: Na doesn't wear high heels, Philine, as she is already taller than most Thais. These were either the Bride's shoes or those of her Sister.

Un grand contraste entre les deux paires de chaussures.
Ray: J'aime observer les différences dans ces collections de chaussures en constante évolution, Martine.

I assume yours were the high heels. Not a pairs of Crocs to be seen, though.
Ray: As I recall, Alan, I was wearing a pair of Reeboks...just in case I was required to chase down the pig intended for the feast.

Fascinating, yes!
Ray: Thank you, Anne...I thought so, too!

Of course the shoes are a little insight into the wearers' personalities.

Looking forward to your new series aimed seemingly at harmless old codgers..
Ray: If that is so, Chris, then it would take a highly trained Psychologist to read my personality...
It is a very sensible idea.

I can hardly wait for tomorrow
Ray: Pace yourself, Bill...there is only so much excitement a Senior Citizen can take!
Those rather garish high heels would be easy to trace should someone else take a liking to them. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow and your offering of the day.
Ray: Just one more sleep, Brian...can you stand the wait!
Quite the assortment - kicking off one's shoes is the norm in most of Europe, too - the UK is the exception.
Ray: I didn't know that, Tom...it is not a common habit in Australia.
I can only imagine the shoe collection at a wedding would be a source of interest - as your photo so aptly shows!
Ray: More variation at weddings than at temples, Elizabeth.
Most people here remove their shoes too.
Ray: Good on them...it is a respectful custom Mary.
I like the eyes on the yellow flip-flop...
