Khao Yai #11

There are jerry-built, but functional, cable-suspension foot-bridges across the Khao Yai river on some walking tracks.

The river looks a little different here than at our resort down the hill, and there are many leeches waiting to leap aboard as you walk close to the water...

Je ne serais pas tranquille sur un tel pont.
Ray: Beaucoup de gens sont troublés quand ils traversent ce genre de pont, Martine ... ils sont en sécurité, mais le mouvement de la structure peut être un peu pénible.
Pretty jungly here!
Ray: Lots of strange plants in this jungle, Elizabeth.
Bridge YES; leeches NO!!
Ray: Leeches have very bad PR, Ginnie...they are quite harmless, but no-one likes them!

Not too jerry-built, I hope. The promise of a leech or two doesn't sound inviting
Ray: Leeches don't bother me, Lisl. We checked each other before getting in the car after the walk, and I was the only one that had attracted a leech...when the kids got a bit excited about it, several folks came running up to us with cigarette lighters, little bottles of salty water, vinegar, etc, and all wanted to save me from the poor little leech...I scraped it off my instep, got in the car and left them to perform their combat!

Great series here and those bridges always fascinate me. That is quite the river and I know stories about those thirsty leeches..... I love the 'do and don'ts' signs....in the park.
Ray: I like these bridges, and the butterflies they induce in the stomach as you walk across them, Astrid. I think the kids enjoyed the outing.

Blimey - just imagine walking innocently by the water, only to be pelted with ravenous leeches!
Ray: Leeches are certainly ravenous beasts, Chris...they can slurp up about 5 times their weight in your blood in a single meal.

Oh, I can imagine walking over this wobbly bridge!
Ray: It is interesting, Philine...sways oddly when more than one person is walking across.

As long as the leeches can't jump up on the bridge I'll be fine. The bridge looks well built with proper U clamps holding it together - I was expected bits of bamboo held together with knicker elastic or something.
Ray: The bridge was fine, Alan, but looked to me like it started with a plan that said simply "put a bridge here", and then moved along in "lets try this and see what happens" stages.
The bridge looks quite substantial. I am not struck on the idea of leaping leeches though
Ray: Poor old leeches have bad press, Bill, but they don't do anything bad to you except take a little blood.

I hate the prospect of leeches Ray. Do they actually leap or just get on if you brush past them?
Ray: These ones have learned to use Pogo Sticks, Chad...the only warning you get is the tiny squeak of the spring compressing then releasing...
Actually, it looks pretty well made and safe.
Ray: It is quite solid and stable, Tom...just lacks safety walls.
The base of the bridge looks fine but the sides would make me feel very uncomfortable with my balance issues so I would give it a miss.
Ray: These bridges unsettle a lot of people, Brian...I sometimes get butterflies in the stomach if there are several people on the bridge and their movement is making bounce or sway, but not nearly enough to stop me.
I have mischievous boy cousins thus a fear of bridges like this.
Ray: These bridges unsettle a lot of people, Mary.
those bridges give me the willies... and leeches, ew!
Ray: Hmmmm...perhaps this walk is not for you, Larry...there is a coffee shop near the carpark, so you could wait for us there.
