Eclipse

The moon eclipse...31 January 2018...was quite a show.

Events like this are good fun in our Village, where voodoo, totemism, paganism and superstition are still powerful players in local culture. As the eclipse progressed, people dashed to the closest Mom&Pop stores to buy whatever fireworks were available. Then, as the eclipse reached its apex, there was a cacophony of fireworks, car and motorbike horns  and oil-drum beating...this "music" intended to remind the moon to come back!

Great telescopic images...
Ray: Thank you, Larry.
Beautiful images, Ray!! Well done!
Sun / Moon eclipses are sacred to the Navajo, it's believed they are mating. The Navajo do not go outside during this time, and pregnant women mustn't even look out the window...
Ray: Very interesting, thank you, Elizabeth...it seems most cultures had a way of dealing with this phenomenon.

Well done, Ray. Well captured.
Ray: Thank you, Frank.

Afterwards it did occur to me that this might have been an occasion where a tripod would help.

Ray, this is something else and thank you for the write-up with it. What an experience this must be. (and that without tripod...wow)
Ray: It is probably the best eclipse event I have seen, Astrid.
You must have been thrilled beyond words to see the Super Blue Blood Moon, Ray! Congratulations.
Ray: I was gobsmacked, Ginnie!
Magnifique vidéo , je n'en ai jamais vu , et toutes ces coutumes sont interessantes
Merci
Ray: C'était un événement merveilleux ... dans le ciel et au Village ... Claudine.

I think we underage the magnificence of having a heavenly body as a neighbour Ray.
Ray: I concur with your contention, Chad.

The moon has always had a powerful effect on people, whether educated or primitive. I witnessed the UK total eclipse in 1999. That was one powerful moment..
Ray: Often I am underwhelmed, Chris...but not this time!

Gobsmacked! Your description of the rituals in your village is very interesting. We saw only a red moon.
Ray: It was a wonderful event...in the sky and in the Village...Philine.
Great stuff Ray. You got the eclipse and the red moon
Ray: All shots made in about one hour, Bill...it was really something!

I remember when I was a kid, we had a solar eclipse and the sun dimmed out strongly during daytime. Dogs were howling and all male chickens went crazy. Lots of noise, then.
Ray: That certainly would have been memorable, Louis.
A brilliant posting Ray, the short video is very good. It is strange how in different parts of the world the peoples have conjured up all sorts of beliefs and rituals for eclipses.
Ray: Thank you, Brian. It was a spectacular celestial event.

I think things like this terrified our ancestors, and so they had to create powerful stories and rituals to cope.
Well done, Ray! We missed it as it was beginning at about 7am, with daylight obliterating sight of the moon.
Ray: It was the best eclipse show I have ever seen, Mary.
Fine shot, Ray!
Ray: Thank you, Tom.
Beautifully clear, Ray. Mine never work.(I'll have to make a note of your settings|)
Ray: Take care, Graeme...I get plenty of duds! smile
