Defensive Tactics

There are many Red Ant [mot daeng] nests in the shrubs in our garden. I like to observe the behaviour of these wonderful critters...sometimes I tap on the nest to watch their defense...their menacing mandibles are a powerful deterrent!

Don't wind them up Ray! They may get together...
Ray: Unlike most other ant species, they don't come in the house, Frank, so I have refuge available! smile
I always love your images of these guys. Fascinating animals!
Ray: Red Ants are the most amazing of garden dwellers, Elizabeth.
Suspens, qui va gagner ?
Ray: Ne pariez jamais contre une fourmi rouge, Martine.

I don't think these red armies have much of a sense of humour Ray..
Ray: I think your observation might be accurate, Chris...I sang The Lumberjack Song to them with drawing even the hint of a smile.

I hope you haven't experienced many nips from those mandibles, Ray. Do they spray formic acid too?
Ray: I have lost count of the times I have felt the massage of those mandibles, Lisl...fortunately though, they are well mannered and do not spit.
Des petites bêtes bien courageuses ..tant qu'elles restent dehors ...
Ray: Je n'ai jamais vu une fourmi rouge à l'intérieur de notre maison, Claudine.

Dp not get them in your pants! Have you not heard the expression "Let sleeping dogs lie?"
Ray: I have heard that expression, Alan...but, these are ants!

Are red ants, as opposed to black, a sign of an alkaline garden Ray?
Ray: We have Black Ants, too, Chad, so litmus testing is Out!
You'd be bad tempered if your butt was full of formic acid
Ray: Ha Ha

I don't think Red Ants have formic acid, Bill...I eat these little warriors occasionally, and can attest that their taste is sweet.
THey can be mean characters if they are disturbed I believe.
Ray: If I tap their nest, Brian, then they come out to see what is happening, and they adopt this menacing stance, with open mandibles.

If there is further disruption they will try to get on me, and inflict a bit of pain.
That is surely a difference in our way of observing out wild friends. I would never disturb anything one of these nests. You did get great mandible shots though.
Ray: I have also been known to stroke a Mantis to get it to look at me, Mary.
Battles on a small scale...
Ray: Red Ants are very assertive, Larry.
Fantastic!
Ray: Wonderful critters, Tom, and they are everywhere in the garden.
