photoblog image Butterfly [3/5]

Butterfly [3/5]

Large, mostly black butterfly [possibly Papilio Memnonseeking moisture from the floor of the poolside shower in the apartment garden.

This species is of nervous disposition, is difficult to get close to, usually flutters constantly, and often has rather battered wings.

I have not seen this species in Bangkok before, so was rather shocked to come upon this evidently perfectly intact specimen as I strolled back to my apartment from a gym session; I dashed home, grabbed the camera and the macro lens, dashed back to the garden, was shocked to see it was still trying to cure its thirst; I was even more shocked to find that it tolerated me laying on the pebbled concrete with the lens hood not even 30cm away from it.

All days are good...some are even better than good...

Absolutley stunning Ray! I have never seen such a butterfly and the bright colors against the black is stunning. Thank you smile
Ray: It was a rare opportunity, Frances, so I was delighted to make a reasonable shot.

It didn't move or flutter because this was me in disguise - nice costume eh!

And brilliant photograph...
Ray: Its a wonderful disguise, Chris. Umh...what were you doing, in disguise, on the floor of the pool shower...this is not some bizarre variation on the old geezer in the dirty overcoat, is it?

This one looks as if it has metal wings Ray. I do l;ike the floor here.
Ray: Tops of the wings are a sort of gunmetal blue colour, and has an attractive sheen, Chad.
This is stunning Ray!
Ray: I was very pleased with the encounter, Bill.

How good she was to wait and pose for you, her condition is so good, maybe it was her maiden voyage too!, beautiful shot Ray smile
Ray: While laying down in the outdoor shower I even had to put up with the slight embarrassment of a tap on the shoulder from a guy who thought I might have had a fall or a heart attack, Linda...all good fun!

The moment was clearly yours. That is why next time, against all odds, you will dash again smile
Ray: Many little things, like this, punctuate one's life as surely as the few big things, Louis...I will certainly dash again!

Sounds like a lucky find, ray, especially to get one in such good condition. It's a cracking shot.
Ray: Thank you, Alan. Shifty eyes multiply the luck of the macro photographer, I find...
A real Beaut here Ray
Ray: It is certainly that way, Martin, when in pristine condition like this one...most that I have seen, though, look rather worn and tattered.
What a great encounter, Ray! I love the blue iridescence along side the black. A beautiful specimen!
Ray: It is a very impressive butterfly, Mary, and you can probably imagine how delighted I was to make this capture.
Yes this day was certainly good Ray, an excellent shot.
Ray: I do get a big kick out of finding and shooting subjects like this, Brian...I am guessing you get a similar kick out of a really good visit to an old church!
Great shot, Ray - thanks for the pointer to your album!
Ray: It was a rare opportunity to make a shot of this beautiful critter, Tom.
