Toby

Butter would not melt in his mouth...

Toby is a big, lumbering adolescent...gentle and friendly, and a little comical due to his strange gait caused by his disclocated hip in infancy.

However, there is something about his appearance that makes visitors nervous. Today we had a visit from the local veterinary officer who is responsible for ensuring all the Village dogs have shots to control rabies...all our dogs, except old Jon Jon, have these shots when we visit the real Vet in Prasat City...the veterinary officer stepped into the yard with his syringe...Jon Jon departed in a hurry [remembers from a year ago that this was not fun]...Toby sensed something was threatening a member of his "family", so immediately bailed up the syringe-carrying bloke, who quickly got a fence between himself and Toby while mumbling something about Jon Jon probably not needing a booster due to his advanced years...

I think we are going to need to be watchful.

He guess he will want to protect you and Na and the human family, too
Ray: I have a feeling Toby is beginning to see his role as Family Protector, Lisl, and his humans are surely part of the Family.

I am not sure if i would trust him, but he is a dear dog. He has experienced a hard life as I remember.
Ray: He is a lovely dog, Philine, but when he puts on his "growly" face it certainly gets attention.
He is protective as boxers are Ray!
Ray: I think this is so, Richard. We need to watch him and educate him in the fine art of understanding true threats, which are rare!

Thought as much...
Ray: We mostly keep Toby in the house yard, Chris, but let him out to interact with other dogs and people a bit every day...we think it is important for him to do this and we supervise as much as possible.

Sounds like he will be useful in keeping undesirables out of the house. I'n sure if you showed the vet such photos h e would be more re-assured.
Ray: The real Vet we visit in nearby Prasat City is a friendly young guy, and a real animal lover. Recently he told us he is also the proud owner of a Pit Bull, and he believes their behaviour directly relates to how they are loved by the humans...he believes they are highly intelligent beasts, and can be extremely good as family pets.

I often get vaccination and other shots from this Vet...take them home...administer to our dogs...he has observed my behaviour with dogs and cats when I have taken them to him, and feels it is all less stressful for the animals if I do the work. Of course, if they are sick, I take them to him for diagnosis.
He looks a soulful fellow here. I have known pit bulls who were real family dogs and gentle as could be. They are alert to threats against the family thus should be well trained to relax from that threat at a sign or command from a member of the family.
Ray: He is a happy and playful Lad, Mary.

We are working hard on getting him to understand our "stand down" order, and he is kept in the house yard when we are not supervising him directly...due to his dis-abilities from his infant hip dislocation, he cannot jump, and so cannot get over the fence.
"You do not want to mess with me!"
i love his shot of Toby Ray...
he was only doing what comes natural to him... protecting the rest of the family....petersmile
I like Toby... and his soft brown fur.
Indeed you are going to be careful, Ray - they know only one response to threat smile
