photoblog image Villagers in Monochrome #3

Villagers in Monochrome #3

Here is a miniseries of candid shots I made at a recent Village gathering.

The shots were made with the Canon 7D, fitted with the 70-200mm f4 L lens plus the 1.4 telephoto extender...most were made in the shade under a canvas marquee, where folks were involved in a Buddhist New Year [Songkran] celebration with 14 chanting monks, and free ice-cream [it was very hot!].

A wonderful peaceful image Ray!
Ray: These young monks are about 15 years old, Richard, and seemed unusually pensive and still t this time.

At first I thought maybe you were able to "document" Mawan's stint as a young monk. Wouldn't that have been something...to be a fly on the wall!
Ray: I have quite a lot of pictures relating to Mawin's back2back stints as a Novice Monk in two different temples, Ginnie, but he was no longer a monk by the time of this event.

Just look at the concentration on their faces, a splendid portrait
Ray: Yes...trying to be sombre and well behaved, Chris...

The peace and quiet and at rest reflects from this picture. Was Mawan one of the monks that were allowed to be present there to or is he in another village?monastery? Great picture.
Ray: Mawin was no longer wearing monks' garb by the time of this event, Astrid, but these monks are from our local temple.
What fantastic faces of concentration Ray, excellent stuff.
Ray: They do seem to be in the zone, Chad...perhaps dreaming of one day caminoing with the hoi poloi...

a wonderful image of the young monks!
Ray: Thank you, Philine...a favourite subject for me.

Our young men would never look relaxed and peaceful like this, Ray
Ray: It is routine in Thai culture for young Lads to spend time in Monk's robes, Lisl, so no problem here.

They look to be enthralled. Was it a lecture about home brewing?
Ray: I think they were anticipating the Monk's double helping of ice-cream routine, Alan. smile
Likey Likey Likey!
Ray: You are very kind, Bill.
Ray: Mawin finished his 10 day Novice Monk programme at the Village temple, then immediately signed up for another 10 day stint at a nearby temple, Mary...the first was Meditation oriented, and the second was Monk rules/behaviour related. He seemed to enjoy the experiences, despite getting a black eye from a relationship adjustment event [aka fight] with another Novice on one occasion.

I am observing closely to see if I can detect any improvement in his home/social behaviour...not a lot is obvious at this early stage.
Another fine portrait in this series Ray.
Ray: I am pleased you like it, Brian, and hope you like tomorrow's entry.

I also took a look at yesterday's b&w's. Panning out to be a great series. These young men would make a teacher proud for the attention they pay. Or are they checking the ice cream?
Ray: They look very attentive, Louis...I think it must be the ice-cream stall. smile
Nice shot, Ray
Ray: Thank you, Tom.
awesome solemn image. the lads take it seriously for sure!!
Ray: These youngsters were uncommonly solemn, Rob.
