Barbet
This is a species of Barbet...I think either the:
- Yellow Eared, - Moustached, or - Moustached and Yellow Eared. They are odd-looking birds...seemingly the head is disproportionately large, the beak overly broad or the tail impossibly short...but are evidently successful and can be seen widely throughout the Kingdom and even [like this one] in Bangkok. Tomorrow I will ask him to turn around so you can see his fancy waistcoat.

Where are the long hairs on the head attached? Yes a strange looking one.
Ray: The "hairs" [modified feathers, I guess] are attached at the base of the beak, near the nostrils.
He seems to be asking - Can I turn around now?
Excellent picture.
Ray: Thanks, Louis. Been trying for some time to get a decent shot of these birds.
Great colors, love the detailed feathers, he has a big mouth, I hope he was freindly with you....I would love to see the other side too,
Ray, this is a likey to me!!!
Ray: Ha Ha. Actually he was rather aloof...stayed up there on the wires, when I would have made him most welcome down on the pavement.
good photo very interesting bird
Ray: So many interesting birds in Thailand...I have become a quite enthusiastic bird-watcher, which seems to amuse my Thai friends.
A well captured strange looking chap.
Ray: Not the prettiest of birds, but certainly interesting.
Just look at the glint in this birds eye
Great detail and clarity Ray
Ray: Thanks, Tracy. I was happy to get a few good shots of this guy, after several unsuccessful attempts in the past.
Great capture of this strange bird! I am amazed by the details.
Ray: He is an odd-looking, but quite handsome, little guy. There are several species of Barbet in Thailand, and they are all colorful and have those distinctive whiskers.
Very strange indeed but with beautiful plumage.
I have just spent the last twenty minutes looking through your archives and I will certainly be back for more!
Ray: Thank you, Stephen. I am very pleased you find my portfolio of interest.
Vocal little bugger, apparently. This is a funny capture, Ray!
Ray: Hi Martin.
My experience is that you don't hear them very often, but the male gets quite noisy if he feels another male is encroaching on his territory or showing too much interest in his gal.
What a truly amazing little bird. I love the colours and the little "Whiskers" :o) John
Ray: Thanks for your comment, John. I think they are quite handsome little critters.
I love his whiskers, Ray! What a cheery little guy!
Ray: Yes...his whiskers are a real feature of Barbets.. Thank you for your comment, Jewlya.
It is interesting to look so closely at this bird with his wonderfully coloured, soft feathers! I admire the power of his 'feet' in order to keep the balance! How do sound his calls?
Ray: Mostly, Philine, they don't make a noise, but if the guy feels threatened by another male, then he becomes quite raucous.
I have hair growing out of my nose to! most annoying! lol
pin sharp, great image. mal
Ray: Actually, mal, if you were a Barbet then the gals would regard you as right handsome....perhaps next incarnation! [grin]
Very well done once again ! It's really funny to imagine a voice with the picture
Ray: Thank you, Zebigleb.
