Bike Tour 2019 #27

I have ridden up a very steep road to the top of the escarpment, and can now see our accomodation for tonight. A rich Thai Man is in the process of building an enormous Casino a few metres across the border into Cambodia [there are no Casinos allowed in Thailand but many Thai people are gambling addicts], and a special deal is available on luxury accomodation at this building site.

I amuse myself with the borrowed camera for a few minutes while waiting for Tim/Koen who are gamefully peddling along a little behind me [I am seriously impressed by the resolve of my inexperienced companions in these challenging conditions].

That bike looks serious, I see you have your time trial bars on, Ray.
Ray: Just a cheep and heavy set of comfort bars, Frank...they five me more hand positions which I find helpful on longer rides. This is my old MTB, which I ride more than the other bikes.
Joli vélo bien équipé. Quel courage de pédaler avec cette chaleur.
Ray: Je dirais que la chaleur était un plus gros défi que le cyclisme, Martine. Nous nous sommes bien hydratés et n'avons pas essayé de rouler vite.
You made it! And so did they... You all should be very impressed with each other and yourselves!
Ray: We are enjoying the challenge and the rewards, Elizabeth.

Another big day tomorrow, and we will be done.

My guess is the casino owner is going to become ever more rich

Your companions are showing true grit..
Ray: This man is already one of the Thai Super-rich, and a canny busness-man.

Tim and Koen are very positive people, Chris.

Still on the bike and I am very impressed by the pictures and stories. What a tour and what a friends. They are the true troopers, like you!!!!
Ray: We make a lot of short trips together, and they are always enjoyable, Astrid.

Good for them in such appalling conditions, Even though I count myself as cyclist, it's rare that I enjoy two consecutive days on the bike. The casinos in Navada have relatively cheap accommodation with a view to luring in more people to play the tables, many from across the border in California. Air con awaits for you all?
Ray: I was much impressed my the efforts of Tim and Koen, Alan.

Non of us are gamblers, so that was no attraction. Breakfast was included in the price, but we intend to be on the road before that is served. I don't much enjoy air-con, but the rooms have no fans and the windows do not open. We could sleep under a tree, I suppose, but this was the only accommodation available.
A plucky duo.
Ray: Yes...they did well, Bill.

I don’t approve of casinos. I remember staying at Durban, where there was a casino, and seeing many aborigines, all dressed up, going there for the evening. I know someone who is addicted to gambling and it is a very sad affair.
Ray: We 3 have no interest in the gambling, Chad.

I believe addiction to gambling is a big problem in Thailand, and would be an even bigger problem if there were casinos in the country.

Our interest in the place is only in having a comfortable place to sleep.

The crane suggests they are still fixing your accommodation up. Hope they completed it in time.
Ray: The casino is a work in progress, Louis, and looks to be a couple of years from completion, but there is accommodation available. The work continued until quite late, but the noise did not prevent me from falling asleep
Not only are you brave to make such a bicycle trip, Ray, but to sleep in a room without a fan with windows that you cannot open shows a very strong & determined character.
Ray: We like to travel, and do not pre-plan much as we like to react to what we find as we go. Staying here was certainly not pre-planned, Beverly, but the only alternative seemed to be sleeping under a tree. smile
Just think of the harm that casino is going to do - and all to make a greedy man richer.
Ray: We made an interesting discovery that the target clients are the newly rick Chinese...I cannot believe that was the original business case, Tom.
i like your bike Ray... it looks like your friends are wearing down your....petersmile
Ray: I took this shot of my friends as they were at the end of what was the biggest day of the tour, Peter...they were finding it tough, but recovered very quickly.
we can always trust some people to find some kind of a loophole and get exactly what they want, Ray. seems to me just another case of rich getting richer by exploiting the poor.
Ray: Yes...this seems to be a widespread issue that we cannot solve, Ayush.
This was a seriously tough part of our trip, at one stage I had to get off my bike and walk... All part of our adventure!
Ray: It was a solid day of activity, Koen, but we got there and recovered quickly.
It certainly doe look very steep. Good on you fellows!
Ray: A big day, but we recovered well, Mary, and were left with a sense of achievement.
