NE Cambodia by bike #04

A short first afternoon ride of only about 20km gets us to the large provincial town of Anlong Veng which, as you see, has not waisted a lot of its budget on road paving. Travel here must be a bit of a challenge in the wet seasen, but we, fortunately, are traveling at the height of the dry seasen and so just get a bit of red dust.

This town has a somewhat infamous past, as it was where Pol Pot [of Khmer Rouge infamy] had his headquarters during that appaling few years in the 1970's...more on this tomorrow.

We quickly find a Guest House, claim a room [at cost around US$4 each, with fan and walm shower] and install our bags, and head off on bicycles to explore the town.

The place looks completely peaceful these days Ray
Ray: Yes...more on that in the next 2 days, Chris.
Dépaysant à  souhait pour moi ..cela doit être plus facile de pédaler sur un tel sol
Ray: En saison sèche, il est tout à fait correct de rouler sur cette surface, Claudine, mais en saison humide, ce serait difficile dans la boue collante.
A part of their history many would prefer to forget
Ray: My feeling is that they are recovering from the trauma, Bill, but forgetting may take a few generations.

The top picture looks very red. I am impressed with the cheapness of the room Ray. Fancy this being the headquarters of that evil person.
Ray: The basics of life [including beer] are quite inexpensive, Chad. I found this place difficult, and will go into it a fit tomorrow.

Interesting stuff, Ray. It seems to be very quiet.
Ray: Cambodia is very sparsely populated, Richard.
Quite an interesting looking row of shops there Ray.
Ray: These are shop-houses, Brian...the shop owners like above their shop...common in this parts.
Not the usual volume of Traffic one associates with your country it must make cycling more relaxed
Ray: Cambodia is sparsely populated, Martin, and especially in this northern region. We like cycling in Cambodia, and relative lack of competing traffic is one reason.
Dusty memories from that day!
Ray: I think we can imagine what it must be like in the Wet season, KK.
the rust red tones and the blue sky are pleasant to watch, Ray.
Ray: Yes...the town is actually quite attractive, Ayush.

Ray, I just went to google streetview and I "walked" through the area and I walked around this square. I am astound that this is even possible. I went back to the border crossing. Now I can follow you on the map LOVE IT.
Ray: Google Earth is one of the Great accomplishments from the Web, Ayush.
Red dirt roads are a common sight to me. Looks wonderful.
Ray: A bit dusty but fine to ride on...in the wet season it would be another story!
