NE Cambodia by bike #06

Despite being recorded internationally as one of the most appaling vilans in history, Pol Pot never went to Prison but lived in some sort of House Arrest arrangement in this house until be died.

In his youth, Pol Pot was a quite clever student, and won a scholarship that took him to France to study for a couple of years. While there, he was exposed to Communism theory. On return to Cambodia, he became involved with the local Communist Party, and quite soon became its leader. Under his leadership, the Communist Party won the election. Very quickly the lack of Checks and Ballances  allowed Pol Pot to take the party to a place where it developed an extreme view that the Country would become great if it forced everyone into a single class that abandoned modern technologies, knowledge and Western influences. Borders were sealed and Khmer Rouge movement maniacly forced their doctrin on everyone. Millions died in the four years that the Khmer Rouge was in power.

Pol Pot never accepted responsibility for his role. In this house I was reminded of the axium "Power corrupts...Absolute Power corrupts absolutely!". I could not stay more than a minute in this house, as it felt full of unrepentent ghosts, and I had the sense that Mankind had failed to learn lessons from this appauling experiment.

Yeah, horrible atmosphere, also caused by all the neglect, for me at least....
Ray: Yes, KK...I think that was a contributing factor.

Presumably Pol Pot was intelligent, so why on earth did he fall for this socialist nonsense in its most deadly form?

Let's hope there will never be a second time..
Ray: Power Corrupts...
Hum...histoitre desolante !!!
Ray: Malheureusement, Martine, nous continuons de voir des choses terribles comme celle-ci se produire de temps en temps.

A senseless and cruel ideology...
Ray: It went very wrong very quickly, Richard.
We learn nothing from history other than that we learn nothing from history
Ray: I cannot let myself take such a cynical view, Bill.

Fascinating to read of this and to hear of your experience. Others such as Pol Pot have tried and failed, too - thankfully.
Ray: Any system of Human Society that minimises the rights of its individual members is likely to fail this way, Alan.
It is a concept that sounds alright on paper but never works, we only have to look round the world to know that, sadly it also requires brutal methods to keep the people in line!
Ray: Interestingly, Brian, The Khmer Rouge were stopped only when the neighboring Communist Vietnamese came across the border and said "Stop the Madness!".
despite his intelligence, i imagine he got into a tunnel vision and nobody next to him challenged his way forward.
Ray: Yes...no checks or balances, or even a friend to offer a caution.

I wanted to read what you had written on visiting this house Ray. It is all quite distressing.
Ray: Certainly I found it so, Chad.
Goodness, that was such a horrible time. I don't understand why mad men continue to hold countries hostage and nothing is done about it.
Ray: It seems to be a recurring issue, Mary, even now!
