It's a great photo - but does seem perplexing. Why do you suppose they're out there then?
Ray: Na's family have been rice farmers for 100 generations, Elizabeth...if Na is perplexed, then I am afraid I am clueless!

One of Na's friends came up with the idea that, as this field is irrigated, there may be a strong regrowth triggered from this haircut and leading to a heavier ultimate crop...Na's family have always lived in the area where there is no irrigation, and so this behaviour would have never occurred.

Most odd then. What is the point of what they are doing?

They must be Management then
Ray: This group is definitely workers, Bill...Management would never stand out in that hot suns for hours. However, they would certainly be taking instruction from management.

An interesting photo - but a bit mysterious for me - their faces are covered with a cloth- and I don't know what they are doing, sorry, I am so stupid!
Ray: Thais go to great lengths to protect their skin from the sun, Philine, as there is a strong negative social stigma about dark skin...actually, this is true of the whole of Asia.

Also, I have discovered that keeping cool when exposed to extreme heat like these people are enduring, is assisted by wearing more clothing rather than less.

Why they are harvesting rice before it is mature is a mystery, but one of Na's friends came up with the idea that, as this field is irrigated, there may be a strong regrowth triggered from this haircut and leading to a heavier ultimate crop...Na's family have always lived in the area where there is no irrigation, and so this behaviour would have never occurred in the 100 generations that they have been rice farmers.
Come on man ... Get a grip. You must have lived out in Thailand long enough to have worked out what is going on.

I do not have a better theory than this, Richard.
The grass looks nice.
Ray: Rice is a wonderful colour when it is at the stage of flowering and head-forming, Mary.
a very fine portrait of this task Ray.
Ray: Na and a couple of her friends [all daughters of rice farmers] drew my attention to this group as we were driving along, Juan Carlos. I stopped the car, lowered the passenger side window, shot the picture without even getting out of the car...lazy photographer!
The height of the rice is quite impressive Ray. In Madagascar it was much lower.
Great capture!
Ray: Irrigated rice seems to grow tall, Richard...probably a different variety from the one grown in areas that depend on rain.
