Half a second until impact!

From even 500 metres distance a hunting Brahminy Kite is an awesome sight. Here is one that spent a few minutes over the Village, seeking Sparrows and Munias in flight...it has talons forward as it is about to take that tiny spot that is a small bird or a Dragonfly, and will eat it without even landing.

Here is a shot I took of a Brahminy Kite performing at a raptor show at the excellent Singapore Bird Park:

What a moment, Ray
Ray: Superb animals, Lisl...I need to find ways to get closer to them when they are hunting.

Nature is a wonderful thing Ray.
Ray: Nature constantly amazes and delights, Chad.

Absolutely terrific stuff Ray!
Ray: Raptors are very impressive, Chris.
You did capture an exceptional moment Ray!
Ray: I have another shot of it eating its catch while still flying, Richard, but the quality is embarrassingly bad.

Prey does not stand a chance with a killing machine like this after it. Whatever it is about to be caught is just a titbit. Great shots.
Ray: Kites are beautiful flyers, Alan.
Your second picture is phenominal. Its so difficult to capture birds in flight. For the first time ever this year I saw kites in Wilteshire, UK.
Ray: I recently saw a couple of kites near Bath, Suzanne. The countryside is a better place for their presence.

Oh, so widely spread out wings and so thin legs - the nature's wonders! Great photography!
Ray: Thank you, Philine.

The Brahminy Kite is a beautiful bird.
What a truly beautiful bird with gorgeous colouration. I wonder if it is about the same size as an eagle.
Ray: Rather smaller than a Bald Eagle, Mary...more like the size of an Osprey.

A very elegant bird!
Judging from the size of the prey, Ray, I suspect he will be on the hunt again not too long after he has dined on this tiny morsel.

Your second image is superb.
Ray: I believe they hunt for several hours every day, Beverly.
I wonder if the ones you saw in Bath were the same ones I saw near Chippenham, as it would probably be within their range and this is quite a rare bird to see in this part of the country.
Ray: I suppose it is possible, Suzanne.
They are certainly beautiful birds Ray.
Ray: Wonderful to observe, Brian, but they are human-shy.
A magnificent bird, Ray, super shot.
Ray: I am delighted you like it, Frank.
The bottom picture is a cracker Ray and the top one gives an idea of the skill of these birds as hunters
Ray: Apparently this species is not at all endangered, Bill, so they are clearly good at what they do.

You shot it well ....eventually
Ray: Getting better as I grow younger, Richard.
Being hit by those talons would be no fun!
Ray: I would guess it could take a bird as big as a pigeon, Tom.
The shot that you took in 2010 is framed very well with great details Ray...

the one taken 500 meters away may be a bit blurry but that is expected with a 400 mm focal lens at his speed...
the action shot takes the prize....petersmile
Ray: For all its short-comings, Peter, I like the top shot the better of the two.
all beauty here, Ray (both shots)
Ray: Superb birds, Ayush...I envy them for their beauty and skills.

Ray: It is a beautiful bird, Bonnie, and a challenge for me is to get closer to it when it is hunting.
